Five Good Books to Read on a Plane

I’m gearing up for a trip out of the country and one of my favorite places to read is on the plane and in the airport. Inspire someone else to pick up a good book by not only making reading the norm, but also by making reading books by Black authors a commonplace sight. I feel so relaxed when in the air, but for those who don’t and who may be in need of something to relax them, here are some books that I highly recommend:

Love Stories by Women of Color is an amazing book that chronicles love stories from our perspective. You can get lost in these stories, which range from the ordinary to the extraordinary, but are all penned by Black women. These short stories can be read at any time throughout the year, but they are excellent for this month, for Valentine’s Day, as well. Each story can be read pretty quickly, allowing you to get your daily literary dose without having to be reminded how the last chapter of a longer book ended, if in fact, you move on to another book for a while or skip a few days of reading to find another way to relax. This is a great one to sneak in your carry-on bag to read on the plane.

We should all be reading books by Black authors!

Find a book that represents you, that changes your outlook on life, then share it with a friend!

The next one is Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey, which is I talk about extensively on my Youtube channel. Check out what I have to say about it here! This is one of my favorite books and it truly changed my outlook on life. I resonated with the way in which the author made rest a doable and incredibly essential way to fight off so many things from stress related disorders to racism. I loved this because I’ve been searching for a book around self-help and law of attraction that had to do with racism. If you’re looking for a self-help book on this flight, Rest is Resistance is a great one.

If you’re looking for some sci-fi, may I suggest The Other Black Girl? I adore that story and I haven’t had the chance to really discuss it the way I’d like to. I actually plan to read this book again and center an event around it so that I can gain other people’s perspectives on it. It creeped me out and gave an exaggerated insight into how cooperate America changes us into warped versions of ourselves.

This is an excellent book to bring with you on board a flight or even on a train ride!

My current favorite book right now is Seven Days in June by Tia Williams. I love the way this book is written and how it gives a peek at how trauma affects us in our day to day lives. If you’ve read this book, I want to invite you to chat with us about it at The Epic Book Chat Volume I, which is a hybrid event centered around the celebration of books by Black authors.

You may be taking a break from work on this trip, but Elaina and Alex certainly are not in this story, where hard work and romance are the norm. These two professionals navigate a difficult relationship after Elaina is fired from a company that she helped to build and you’ll never guess who owns it. No need to guess. Grab a copy of your book right here!!

Check out some of these books and let me know what you think! Happy reading!!
