The Portrayal of Black Love in Romance Novels

It’s Valetine’s Day and you may be looking for the perfect book to cuddle up with. I have recommended some of my favorites in a few articles on my blog because romance novels are my favorite genre of books HANDS DOWN. I love a good love story and I can talk about them all day. From Brenda Jackson to Tia Williams and everyone in between I am fan!

How are we portrayed in the romance fiction community? Is it similar to real life?

I find that that is an interesting question and it truly depends on what you read and who you ask. We have to realize that reality is completely relative to the individual seeking it. My reality has me happy and abundant, for the most part. Like anyone else, I have my days where I’d like to slap a person, then I weigh my options, therefore I seek out characters that are the same way. They go on vacations, which give me ideas for places I need to visit. They are often entrepreneurs and women that have very smart mouths.

I love reading romance novels penned by Black authors.

There are so many to choose from including historical fiction and erotic fiction. Check out some video reviews on my Youtube channel here!

Find some characters that you can identify with! That is the best way to fall in love with books that portray you and your community in a great light. Hollywood has been known to cast us in a negative light, which forced us to create greater spaces for ourselves and gave birth to amazing companies like KevonStage Studios and Hoorae, formerly known as Issa Rae Productions. If I’m being honest, it made space for this blog, as well. I want to see everyone read more books by Black authors, so I decided to start writing about them and sharing my love of books with others.

The time has passed for us to continue asking for space at the table. We are a brilliant and capable group of people with amazing imaginations. We have to continue writing our own stories and we all need to read them….beyond Black history month.
